Traditional ankylosing spondylitis (AS) treatments include:

  • NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like aspirin or ibuprofen.
  • DMARDs (disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs) have also been used to treat AS.
  • For some patients, rheumatologists may recommend deep breathing, stretching, and strengthening exercises to reduce the stiffness and pain associated with AS. Exercise can also help reduce bending and stooping by making muscles stronger and improving posture. (It is important to keep in mind what is within your limits. Even moderate exercise is beneficial. You should talk to your rheumatologist about which exercise might provide the most benefit to you with the least amount of strain.)

What is REMICADE?

REMICADE is in a class of advanced drugs, called biologics. REMICADE can reduce the inflammatory process that causes the pain, fatigue, and other symptoms of AS.

  • REMICADE can change the course of AS therapy. For many patients with active ankylosing spondylitis, REMICADE can provide rapid and sustained symptom relief in as soon as two weeks. Individual results may vary.
  • While NSAIDs relieve back pain associated with AS, REMICADE treats an underlying cause of inflammation and improves ankylosing spondylitis symptoms that occur throughout the body.
  • REMICADE works with your immune system to block tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha). TNF-alpha is a protein in your body that triggers the inflammation leading to the symptoms of AS.
  • REMICADE improves many ankylosing spondylitis symptoms. REMICADE treats pain, fatigue, and morning stiffness caused by your AS.
