Questions to Ask Your Gastroenterologist

Questions to Ask Your Gastroenterologist

It’s often a good idea to write down any questions you have for your gastroenterologist in advance so you won't forget to ask them during your visit.

The following are some specific questions you might ask:

  1. How will Crohn's affect my body?
  2. How might my disease change over time?
  3. Should I expect any complications from my Crohn's and, if so, what might happen?
  4. What different types of treatment should I consider?
  5. How can they help me, and how do they work?
  6. What are the benefits and side effects of the different types of treatment?
  7. How long will it take before the treatment helps me feel better?
  8. What can I do to help myself?
  9. Are there particular foods or activities I should avoid? Any that might help?
  10. What are the warning signs that my disease is worsening?
  11. What should I do during a flare-up of symptoms?
  12. Do you suggest any medications to deal with these symptoms, such as antidiarrheal medicine?
  13. How often should I schedule follow-up appointments?
  14. Should I see any other healthcare professionals, such as a nutritionist or dietician?

When asking your questions, make sure to have your gastroenterologist explain anything you don't understand.
