Explaining REMICADE to Your Child

As a parent of a child with pediatric Crohn’s disease, you will want to explain the disease and its treatment to your child.  REMICADE is given in an IV infusion, which may seem unusual to a child.  Learn all you can about REMICADE and the infusion process, and communicate what you know to your child.

Here are some ways to help put your child’s mind at ease:

  • Encourage your child to ask questions and to discuss those questions and any other concerns with you and his or her healthcare provider.
  • Explain the infusion process to your child. Let him or her know that an infusion gets the medicine right into the bloodstream so that it can get to work.  And the faster it starts working, the sooner your child will feel better.
  • Your child may feel better knowing that after the first three doses of REMICADE, the infusion process may be as few as six times a year.

Recently, there was a yearlong study of other kids with Crohn’s who started treatment with REMICADE. Let your child know that many of those kids felt better within two weeks of their first treatment. REMICADE helped them get back to doing things they like to do.
