Linda's Story “Today I have found new joys in life.” The symptoms started innocently, with complaining of a sore wrist after playing catch with my former husband. But soon my other wrist hurt, followed by virtually all my joints. I initially tested negative for RA factor, so I went through eight months of testing and received what seemed like every diagnosis known to man. In 1982, when my rheumatologist finally gave me a diagnosis, he called it 'classic' RA. My physical movement had diminished, and I could not continue with my favorite activities, like antiquing and weekend getaways. The onset of RA was fast and furious and seemed to steal away any normalcy that once existed in my life. My body was losing body mass, and I felt as though my small frame was going to collapse under the extreme pain I experienced in my hands, feet, and shoulders. In a span of two decades, I have had almost too many surgeries to count — 18 or 19 — including seven joint replacements. I was on at least 30 different medications. I never really went into remission. I prided myself on being positive, but often found myself in a dark place. After 20 long years with a disease that ended my career and my marriage — the sun finally came out for me. My first REMICADE infusion took place in December 1999. I was very confident it was going to work, and it did. My flexibility and movement increased, and my swelling decreased. I realize my life will never be normal, but I am satisfied. REMICADE has improved my quality of life, but I still have to face the consequence of having had this disease for such a long time. My RA has progressed too far for me to get back to a physically active lifestyle, but many others living with the disease today can prevent further damage. This is why I encourage other people living with RA to seek treatment early because REMICADE not only treats the signs and symptoms, but is also proven to stop the progression of the disease. Today I have found new joys in life — now I have energy when I wake up in the morning and am able to perform normal daily activities, such as cooking, using the computer, and indoor gardening. I also volunteer at church and lead a support group for people with chronic illness. I am using my nursing degree to counsel people who are dealing with similar struggles I once faced, bringing a little sunshine back into their lives!
