Reducing Stress

It probably goes without saying that the unpredictability and discomfort of ulcerative colitis can be an additional source of stress. Unfortunately, stress can affect your digestion by speeding up or slowing down the passage of food through your intestines.

To keep stress to a minimum, try the following relaxation techniques:

  • Mild exercise. There is some evidence that exercise may even help normalize bowel functioning.
  • Yoga or meditation.
  • Deep breathing.
  • Biofeedback. This technique teaches you how to reduce the physical signs of stress, such as muscle tension and rapid heartbeat.
  • Progressive relaxation exercises. In this approach, you learn how to relax each muscle in your body, one by one.
  • Setting aside a little time every day to do something you enjoy, such as gardening or watching a favorite TV show.

Perhaps most importantly, understanding your condition can reduce the fear and stress associated with it. Try reading up on ulcerative colitis, take notes during gastroenterologist visits and ask your gastroenterologist detailed questions.
