Questions to Ask Your Gastroenterologist

It’s often a good idea to write down any questions you have for your gastroenterologist in advance so you won't forget to ask them during your visit.

The following are some specific questions you might ask:

SYMPTOMS

  1. How will ulcerative colitis affect my body?
  2. How might my disease change over time?
  3. Should I expect any complications from my ulcerative colitis, and if so, what complications might happen?

TREATMENT

  1. What different types of treatment are available to me?
  2. How can these treatments help me, and how do they work?
  3. What are the benefits and potential side effects of the different types of treatment?
  4. How long will it take before the treatment helps me feel better?

MANAGING MY ULCERATIVE COLITIS

  1. What else can I do to help myself?
  2. Are there particular foods or activities I should avoid? Any that might help?
  3. What are the warning signs that my disease is worsening?
  4. What should I do during a flare-up of symptoms?
  5. Do you suggest any medications to deal with these symptoms, such as antidiarrheal medicine?

DOCTOR’S APPOINTMENTS

  1. How often should I schedule follow-up appointments?
  2. Can I schedule my appointments now?
  3. Should I see any other healthcare professionals, such as a nutritionist or dietitian?

When asking your questions, make sure to have your gastroenterologist explain anything you don't understand.
