Ankylosing spondylitis and REMICADE®

Your immune system works around the clock to protect your body from bacteria, viruses, and other foreign agents. When you have ankylosing spondylitis, your immune system becomes overactive and produces excess amounts of a protein called tumor necrosis factor-alpha, or TNF-alpha.

The presence of excess TNF-alpha causes your immune system to mistakenly attack healthy joint cells. This leads to the inflammation or swelling and other symptoms you may experience with ankylosing spondylitis. REMICADE® has been shown to block the action of TNF-alpha. This inhibits an underlying cause of inflammation.

Managing your ankylosing spondylitis

Not everyone with ankylosing spondylitis has the same symptoms, and the impact of ankylosing spondylitis may vary over time. While some people with ankylosing spondylitis have only occasional back pain and discomfort, others may have long periods of severe pain in the back and other areas of the body, including the neck, hips, thighs, shoulder blades, and heels.

Because the symptoms of ankylosing spondylitis can differ from person to person and can get worse over time, it is important to talk with your doctor about managing your symptoms. However, it's important to keep in mind that biologics are medicines that affect your immune system and can cause serious side effects. Talk to your doctor to find out if treatment with prescription REMICADE® is right for you.
