HOW REMICADE® WORKS
Children with Crohn’s have too much of a protein called tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in their body. TNF-alpha can be a good thing, since it helps to regulate immune cells and inflammation in the body. It can also signal a protective immune response to help block certain infections. In autoimmune diseases like Crohn’s, TNF-alpha can be bad, since too much of it offsets the immune system’s balance and causes excess inflammation.
Excess amounts of TNF-alpha cause your immune system to mistakenly attack healthy cells in the GI tract, leading to inflammation—the underlying cause of Crohn’s symptoms.
REMICADE® belongs to a class of biologic medications known as TNF-blockers. REMICADE® binds to TNF-alpha, blocking its action.
